Back For The New Year

Long time no post.  Just didn't make it a priority to keep up with this last year, but since it's time for everyone to make their resolutions, trying to be a regular blogger will be one of mine.

Quick recap of where my view was at the end of the year.  Slightly bullish with a variety of long positions, but hedged with XLF puts and QQQ and SPY put spreads.  Not a lot of capital was committed to the hedges, only about 1-2% of my total account.  Got washed out of the QQQ and SPY spreads on the big up day on Tuesday and have not put any back on yet.  Both ETF's are holding above their 200-day moving averages, so I'm not ready to go short on them yet.  Also got washed out of some of the XLF puts on Tuesday.

DIA, SPY

Interesting that volume on DIA was still below 20 day EMA on big 3/10 rally. 3/10 close 69.14. Same thing on SPY. 3/10 close 72.17.

SPY

As expected, trendline was broken intra-day by the high of 70 on 3/9, although still closed below. Expect to break again, at least intra-day, by any move above 3/9 close. New short-term support at 3/6 low of 67.09? 3/9 down day was on lowest volume since 2/26 and below 20 day volume EMA. No strong opinion on next short-term direction. 3/9 close 68.11.

SPY

Very sharp downtrend since 79.67 high on 2/26. Volume up 5 straight days as moved lower. Downtrend probably too steep to go short based on that trend - could not go higher than roughly 3/6 close without breaking trendline. Stop would be too tight. 3/6 close 68.92.
